How to Improve Your Jump Shot

Basketball is a sport that relies on both offense and defense. Although defense is an important part of basketball, a good offense is also vital because a team will not be able to win if they cannot score field goals. Among the assortment of shooting techniques, the jump shot is perhaps the most elegant to look at because it allows the shooter to score even if he has a defender up front.

The ability to shoot perfect jump shots not only helps in the offense of the team, but it also grants the shooter a way to greatness. The truth is shooting the perfect jump shot is not all that difficult. It just takes a lot of determination, motivation, and persistence. Reading on how to execute the perfect technique is a great input. However, in order for it to become useful, you need to practice and practice the technique for it to become a great output, something which can be useful when playing the game. Below is a list of steps on how you can greatly improve your jump shot.

Foot Placement – this is an important element, not only for the jump shot, but for the entirety of the game. When receiving the ball, your feet should be shoulder width apart in order to have good balance. Make sure your foot, the one that is of the same side of your shooting hand, is nearest the basket than your other foot.

Hands – upon catching the ball, you should be in the ready-to-shoot position. Always make sure that the ball rests on your fingertips and not flat on the palm of your hands as this will throw-off the back spin you place on the ball.

Elbow Location – make sure that your elbow is tucked neatly near your body and is aligned towards the hoop.

Jump – the jump in a jump shot is quite important. If you shoot without jumping, it makes it quite easy to defend against. A skilled jump shooter will be able to execute the jump with ease and be able to release the shot at the peak of their leap.

Focal Point – it is important to have a spot focused on at the hoop. It can be a matter of concentrating on a portion of the hoop or imagining a spot in the middle of the hoop that you need to hit.

The Shot – once you are near into releasing your shot, make sure to snap your wrist smoothly while giving the ball some back spin upon its release. Make sure to never force a shot.

Confidence – after practicing your shot over and over, you will gain the confidence that your shot will hit nothing but net.

The art of the jump shot has no quick to master solution. In order to improve, it is important that you devote some time in mastering the shot so that you will be able to use the technique when you are playing the real game.

I have been playing basketball for just over 2 years. I am 6’1”. I have been practicing really hard also and I have seen improvements in my game. I would normally wake up early at morning and hit the court. I can shoot very well off the board from certain angles, but my nothing but net game is not that good. However, I am really good at getting the ball to the rim. My favourite player is Dwayne Wade and I try to copy his moves and practice them on the court. I am currently working on my shooting game. My advice to you will be to go to the court and set goals and don’;t leave until you meet them. Also, watch as much basketball as possible and take in as much as you can. You can work on different aspects of your game daily or you can set aside a specific time for a specific part of your game. Good luck. I hope this helped.

Practice is really the key in improving your overall game. Even if you are talented, without any practice or the drive to become better, you will be surpassed by those that are dedicated in improving their game.
