How to Improve Your Mental Game in Basketball

It is a proven fact that improving your mental game can help to make you shoot better.  For example, if you keep on thinking that you will miss your shot, it is likely that you will not be taking or risking any shots during the game even when you are totally free.  You think that you will feel bad and lousy if you miss your shot.  Even when you decide to take your shot, the fact that you think it will not go in, this means your shots won’t definitely go in.

The truth is there are ways that you do to help improve your mental game.  This can be accomplished by following the steps below:

Don’t Think – thinking too much will allow you to lose valuable seconds, and worst, make you doubt yourself.  Try to leave the thinking during practice, and observe to enhance the mechanics of your shooting.  Make sure to practice, practice, and practice so that when the time comes that you need to execute a shot, it will simply be second nature for you.  You no longer have to think of the shot, the shot comes by naturally.

Don’t Be Afraid to Fail – never be disappointed if more than half of your shots don’t go in.  The truth is even professional basketball players don’t have a 100 percent shooting accuracy.  In fact, many of them will be glad if they even had 60 percent shooting accuracy.  Missing several shots in the course of game is not the end of the world.  If you worry too much about your missed shots, then you’ll likely end up missing more.  Always remember, even the best of the best misses their shot.  If you feel that your shooting hand is not up to the task in your current game, try to contribute in other ways such as defense.

Get in Your Zone – if you have been playing basketball for years, you are likely notice that there are games that your shots seems effortless and that you are making most, if not all of your shots.  This is what they refer to as getting in the zone.  If you try to focus and clear your thoughts of any distractions, there is a possibility that you will get in your zone.

Relax – if you think too much, your body becomes anxious.  Try to relax and lose any thoughts.  When you are fully relaxed, you will feel that your shots are more smooth and accurate.  Make it a point to relax a few minutes before the game to unwind any buildup of tension.
Basketball is not just a physical game as it also involves mental training.

Training both your physical and mental capacity when playing basketball can undoubtedly make you a better player.
