Basketball is a sport that is popular regardless of what country you are from. It is important for us to remember that basketball is not just a game of shooting, but a game of tactic as well as defense. Basketball is filled with many violations that don’t just come from fouls. In fact, there are a plethora of non-foul violations that a player needs to remember and understand in order not to commit them and lose possession of the ball.
A violation is a breach in the rules of basketball that does not result in a free throw but a turnover in ball possession. There are basically two categories for non-foul violations – Ball Handling and Time violations.
Ball Handling Violations
Traveling – this violation occurs when the player takes more than one and half step without dribbling while in possession of the ball or when you stop dribbling and change your pivot foot.
Double Dribble – this violation occurs when a player stops dribbling and then decides to dribble again. This violation also occurs when a player dribbles the ball with both hands at the same time.
Carrying or Palming – this violation occurs when the player dribbling places his palm under the ball as soon as the ball reaches the apex of its dribble. The palm of the dribbling hand needs to face the floor when dribbling.
Over and Back – this violation occurs when a player crosses the midcourt towards their offensive court and crosses back to the backcourt.
Time Violations
Three Seconds – any player of the offensive team must not be inside the free throw lane for more than 3 seconds at a time.
Five Second Inbound Violation – this violation occurs when inbounder of the offensive team fails to pass the ball to a teammate after 5 seconds.
Ten Seconds in Back Court – this violation occurs if the offensive team fails to take the ball across the midcourt towards their offensive court after 10 seconds.
Lane Violation – this is a violation that may apply to both offensive and defensive team. When a player attempts to shoot a free throw shot, no player lined up in the free throw lane may enter inside the free throw lane until the ball has left the hand of the shooter. A lane violation may result into a turnover or the team getting another free throw attempt.
Other Non-Foul Violations
Goaltending – this violation occurs when a defensive player illegally interferes with a shot, especially if the ball is on a downward path towards the basket. Touching the rim or net while the ball is being shot may result into the violation being call where the offensive team automatically receives the basket.
Kicking – this violation occurs when a defensive player attempts to kick the ball in order to deflect the pass or its bounce. The offensive team will retain possession of the ball for this type of violation.
